Project Global Citizen.

Project Global Citizen is a ground-breaking approach to on-boarding international students and optimising their experience in Australia. A pilot project has been awarded Queensland Government support through the Queensland International Education and Training Partnership Fund (IET Partnership Fund) managed by Study Queensland at Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ).

The project.

ONBOARDING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS.

The challenge.

The expectations of international students are not always met in relation to their post-arrival transition experience, employability options and safety.

The vision.

The vision is to ensure international students arriving in Australia have the right cultural skills to thrive in their studies, feel integrated into Australian society, secure ethical internships and employment, and have a safe and enjoyable experience.

The pilot project.

The pilot project will be Queensland’s most extensive global survey to date for identifying cultural competency gaps of students in relation to academic learning, social integration, securing internships, employment and safety.

Findings from the pilot project to be shared in late 2018 will help international students, education agents, institutions, peak organisations and student support providers in improving the student experience.

Data from the surveys will also inform the intercultural resources being developed for international students by Alphacrane Intercultural Specialists and CTC, Cultural Transition Consulting as part of the broader Project Global Citizen initiative.

Working hand-in-hand with Study Queensland, the Project Global Citizen consortium comprises ISANA Qld, Alphacrane Intercultural Specialists and CTC, Cultural Transition Consulting.

ISANA Qld is the state branch of ISANA International Education Association, Australia’s representative body for international education professionals. ISANA Qld President Samantha Hilbig is the project sponsor for Project Global Citizen.

The founders and project managers of Project Global Citizen are intercultural practitioners Craig Shim and Astrid Hofmann.

Craig Shim is an intercultural consultant with over two decades of global marketing and cross-cultural consulting experience. He is the director and founder of Queensland-based Alphacrane Intercultural Specialists.

Astrid Hofmann is an intercultural consultant with over two and half decades of experience working with multi-national organisations including Defence training institutes in Australia and abroad. She is the founder and Director of CTC, Cultural Transition Consulting.

The Project Global Citizen consortium invites the following individuals to participate in the pilot project:

  • International students who are considering studying in Queensland or who are currently studying in Queensland
  • Education Agents
  • Education Providers & Student Advisors (Queensland-based)
  • Student Accommodation Providers (Queensland-based)
  • Peak bodies & associations (Queensland-based)

The survey.

ABOUT THE SURVEY.

The survey is now closed.

Thank you to everyone – from Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe – who participated in the 2018 Project Global Citizen Survey!

The global survey measured the cultural challenges that international students encounter during their studies in Queensland, Australia.

We are currently in the process of analysing the data to quantify the most significant cultural competency gaps.

We’d love to share the key findings with you when they’re ready in early 2019. If you’d like a copy of the findings, please contact us by clicking on the button below.
