Project Global Citizen.

Project Global Citizen is a ground-breaking approach to on-boarding international students and optimising their experience in Australia.

In 2018 a  global survey to quantify the cultural competency gaps of international students coming to and arriving in Australia was awarded Queensland Government support through the Queensland International Education and Training Partnership Fund (IET Partnership Fund) managed by Study Queensland at Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ).

The results of the global survey were revealing: 75% of international students fall within the “somewhat high” and “high” risk categories from a cultural perspective in relation to academic learning, social integration, securing internships, employment and safety.

In 2019, the first Project Global Citizen cultural competency accelerator program for international students is being rolled out across Victoria with the support of Study Melbourne and the Victorian Government. The program helps international students develop cultural competency skills to become global citizens who can survive and thrive in Australia and around the world.

The project.

ONBOARDING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS.

The challenge.

The expectations of international students are not always met in relation to their post-arrival transition experience, employability options and safety.

Project Global Citizen addresses the risk of students under-achieving in the areas of academic, social, safety and employability due to gaps in cultural competency.

By reducing these risks, institutions produce more graduates who become life-long ambassadors for their alma mater and for Australia. This is important because Australia relies heavily on international students to financially sustain our high standard of education.

The vision.

Our vision is to provide every international student in Australia with the opportunity to develop as a Global Citizen with the right cultural skills to thrive in their studies, feel integrated into society, be globally employable, and to have a safe and rewarding experience.

Who’s behind Project Global Citizen.

Project Global Citizen started in 2017 as a partnership between two Australian-based intercultural practitioners, Craig Shim (Alphacrane Intercultural Specialists) and Astrid Hofmann (CTC, Cultural Transition Consulting).

Coming from a commercial background providing coaching and training to corporate and government clients, Astrid and Craig recognised the need for developing future leaders equipped with the 21st century cross-cultural skills necessary for thriving in a truly global marketplace.

Using the same intercultural frameworks provided to their corporate clients, Craig and Astrid collaborated to tailor a ground-breaking program for international students. This program is Project Global Citizen.

Working hand-in-hand with Study Queensland, the Project Global Citizen consortium comprised ISANA Qld, Alphacrane Intercultural Specialists and CTC, Cultural Transition Consulting.

ISANA Qld is the state branch of ISANA International Education Association, Australia’s representative body for international education professionals. ISANA Qld President Samantha Hilbig was the project sponsor for Project Global Citizen global survey initiative.

The founders and project managers of Project Global Citizen were intercultural practitioners Craig Shim and Astrid Hofmann.

Craig Shim is an intercultural consultant with over two decades of global marketing and cross-cultural consulting experience. He is the director and founder of Queensland-based Alphacrane Intercultural Specialists.

Astrid Hofmann is an intercultural consultant with over two and half decades of experience working with multi-national organisations including Defence training institutes in Australia and abroad. She is the founder and Director of CTC, Cultural Transition Consulting.

The 2019 Project Global Citizen cultural competency accelerator program for international students has been awarded Victorian Government support through Study Melbourne.

The 2019 project consortium is led by Melbourne Polytechnic under the leadership of Chewy Fang. Other consortium members include Manorani Guy, President of VicWISE (Victorian Working Group on International Student Employability) and the two project co-founders, Astrid Hofmann of CTC, Cultural Transition Consulting  and Craig Shim of Alphacrane Intercultural Specialists.

The 2018 global survey.

ABOUT THE SURVEY.

The global survey measured the cultural challenges that international students encounter during their studies in Queensland, Australia.

We have analysed the data to quantify the most significant cultural competency gaps and will be sharing that to all survey participants, as well as on this website, very shortly.
